Happy Monday Healthcare Advocates
First, a happy 4th of July to all of you. Let me recommend that if fireworks are your jam (as my daughter says) go to a professional fireworks show. Much safer, you’ll have all the eyes and fingers after the show that you had the day before.
My neighborhood has had problems with property being set ablaze with fireworks so we will be on hose patrol Tuesday evening. The holiday honors our independence from a regime that oppressed without the advice or consent of those governed. It does not celebrate your freedom to oppress others.
I would like to encourage comments and suggestions from you if you have time. If there is a special topic you’d like to see please let me know. Please use the comment button below.
Healthcare Freedom
Today’s note is short and the theme is freedom.
It is really simple.
We the people want the freedom to go to whichever doctor or hospital we choose, and have our insurance cover it.
We the people want freedom from medical debt and bankruptcy.
We the people want to be free from medical deserts.
We the people want the freedom to be able to change jobs when it suits our needs or career and not be locked into the job because that’s where the health insurance is provided.
We the people want to be free to have reproductive health care, not death care.
We the people want freedom from copays and deductibles because they reduce our doctor visits and then we become sicker.
We the people want to be able to follow a doctor’s advice and instructions and have our insurance reimburse the provider for whatever is medically necessary. That means reproductive healthcare, gender affirming healthcare, my knee replacements. Whatever. If the doctor says it and I agree that’s the end of it.
ACTION
We the people know what to do. We let our representatives know we want to be free from the stifling grasp of pharmacy benefit managers that wring every dime possible from our prescription plans, private equity funds that squeeze the life out of rural hospitals, and a system designed to generate as much cash as possible instead of saving lives.
It’s time to have them bring universal healthcare, either HR 3421 or S 1655 to a vote. Their contact info is below. Call or email them and tell them it’s time to be free. Make sure you vote for people who will make this happen.

Thanks Maureen. I made good use of your notes on the UHCC. Happy 4th to you. Hopefully we can move things forward.
Thanks for your take on healthcare freedom. Here's a generally similar one I published, August 2020: https://medium.com/@idember/9-freedoms-of-healthcare-justice-5077bdbff9f2
There's a paradox here, and it's hurting our cause. Rightwingers scream that single-payer Medicare for All takes away freedoms of patients and doctors. In fact, the opposite is true (natch).
...But how to counter the rightwing argument in simple, intuitive ways?
