Hello, it’s me again. Thanks so much for all you do.
Is there any interest in the Centene take over of Trillium (Oregon Health Plan) and subsequent release of profits to its stockholders. Because Medicaid in Oregon is a for profit business.
If nothing else just to emphasize that Universal Health Care is the answer.
Anyway someone from the league advocacy team that I belong to asked me if there was “pending legislation”
I mean I have been yelling that supporting Universal Health Care with the Governing Board is the answer. Oh well…
Should I assume that the AMA opposes universal healthcare on the basis that medical specialists, especially, could suffer large reductions in their income? Or, am I wrong?
Hi Gary. Happy New Year to you 3. It's not so simple. An arm of the AMA favors Universal Healtcare but it is small. I will share the reasons and sources later. As a body they oppose it.
Insurance for everyone - not necessarily the government involved.
The topic is a long standing issue for them - in the late 40's they opposed it because it meant doctors would have to treat black patients. They called out the program as socialism.
They have written an apology for that in 2018.
I think they fear being told what to do more than the income since 75% of doctors are salaried. Worth noting that the National Nurses Union is a supporter of HR 3421 as is the American College of Physicians.
The American College of Physicians.was formed because originally the AMA would not admit black doctors. I told you their history is ugly.
The AMA stance that you link dates back to 2017, during the tRump administration. At that time they supported strengthening the ACA, etc. Universal healthcare wasn’t a possibility.
I am told by my primary care physician that some specialties earn far more than other specialties that are just as essential, i.e., internists versus radiologists. At the large, multiple office clinic where I get most of my care, physicians are paid by billable procedure. I am not sure whether there is a basic salary. But at that clinic, specialists earn multiples of what we formerly thought of as family doctors.
And yes, the AMA has an ugly history as do many organizations and institutions.

I don't know how you do this every day. I am thankful for your passion, commitment and accuracy in reporting
Thanks Irene - Happy New Year!! It is my pleasure to present what I learn. I'm glad to hear it is useful.
Alan,
Should I assume that the AMA opposes universal healthcare on the basis that medical specialists, especially, could suffer large reductions in their income? Or, am I wrong?
Happy new year!
Gary

Hi Gary, support for Universal Healthcare came up at the latest AMA meeting and was defeated. Here is their position on their site. https://www.ama-assn.org/delivering-care/patient-support-advocacy/ama-vision-health-care-reform
