COVID UPDATE
All Americans ages 6 months and older should receive one of the new Covid-19 vaccines when they become available this fall, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday. The recommendation comes as the nation faces a summer wave of Covid, with the number of infections rising in at least 39 states and territories. (June 27, 2024 CDC Press Release)
Read Your Thoughts
If you think telepathy or mind control is the stuff of science fiction, think again. Advances in artificial intelligence are leading to medical breakthroughs once thought impossible, including devices that can actually read minds and alter our brains. Dr. Sean Pauzauskie, a Neurologist at UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital, says there are now about 30 neurotechnology devices for sale on the internet, including Emotiv, which he says is the first commercial-grade brain-to-computer interface.
These devices can detect epilepsy and help researchers learn more about brain function, but they also offer those who need them vital access. Some of the devices can perform basic computer actions such as move a cursor - by thought.
Currently equipment is about 40% accurate converting brain wave patterns to words but that accuracy is expected to rise to 90% in coming years.
The companies that build these devices and have access to brain wave patterns are under no privacy requirement and many share data collected with other companies so Colorado just passed a law to demand privacy of thought. Watch this space. (CBS NEWS)
Healthcare Fraud
Health care fraud is not a victimless crime. It affects everyone—individuals and businesses alike—and causes tens of billions of dollars in losses each year. It can raise health insurance premiums, expose you to unnecessary medical procedures, and increase taxes.
Health care fraud can be committed by medical providers, patients, and others who intentionally deceive the health care system to receive unlawful benefits or payments.
The FBI is the primary agency for investigating health care fraud, for both federal and private insurance programs. (FBI)
There are major differences when fraud is committed against the US government as opposed to a private corporation, like a health insurance company. The difference is that the US government can send out the FBI and does. Private insurance often does not report the fraud and just absorbs the cost of fraudulent claims into next year’s premiums.
Remember that if we had a national single payer universal healthcare system, as in HR 3421, any insurance fraud would be vigorously pursued by the FBI.
Reported today: The U.S. Justice Department has criminally charged 193 people, including 76 doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, with participating in health care fraud schemes worth $2.75 billion, the agency said on Thursday.
The two-week operation ensnared defendants accused of illegally distributing millions of pills of the stimulant Adderall. It also included $176 million in fraudulent schemes involving drug and alcohol abuse treatment, including one defendant accused of billing the federal Medicaid program for treatment that was either inadequate or nonexistent, Attorney General Merrick Garland said.
The bust also targeted schemes involving telemedicine, charging 36 defendants accused of collectively submitting over $1.1 billion in false claims to the U.S. Medicare program.
“The Justice Department will bring to justice criminals who defraud Americans, steal from taxpayer-funded programs, and put people in danger for the sake of profits," Garland said during a press conference.
The government seized more than $231 million in cash, luxury vehicles, gold and other assets in the law enforcement action that spanned 32 federal districts.
In one scheme, federal prosecutors charged seven people associated with the San Francisco-based telehealth startup Done Global with illegally distributing Adderall, a stimulant used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, commonly known as ADHD.
One nurse practitioner at the company was accused of prescribing 1.5 million pills of Adderall while having little interaction with patients. The company's founder and top doctor were charged earlier this month. (Reuters)
I repeat if we had a national single payer universal healthcare system, as in HR 3421, any insurance fraud would be vigorously pursued by the FBI.
Protect Yourself From Fraud
Here is link to FBI Resources about healthcare fraud. It also contains valuable information about protecting yourself from such fraud - worth a look.
Protect your health insurance information. Treat it like a credit card. Don't give it to others to use, and be mindful when using it at the doctor’s office or pharmacy.
Beware of “free” services. If you're asked to provide your health insurance information for a “free” service, the service is probably not free and could be fraudulently charged to your insurance company.
Check your explanation of benefits (EOB) regularly. Make sure the dates, locations, and services billed match what you actually received. If there’s a concern, contact your health insurance provider.
