Medicaid and ACA Cuts Increase Debt, Illness, and Deaths
We have previously reported that the number of people on track to lose health insurance under the Republican give away to the rich is between 13 and 20 million Americans, between Medicaid cuts and ACA retractions.
Now according to CNBC the proposed federal spending cuts to health care in Republicans’ “One Big Bogus Bill Act” may increase some families’ medical debts by as much as $22,800, according to a new report from Third Way, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank.
Additionally, preventable chronic illness and deaths will also rise.
The Republican budget bill proposes $1.1 trillion in cuts to health care that target both Medicaid and Affordable Care Act coverage.
16 Million To Lose Health Insurance
The Congressional Budget Office, or CBO, a nonpartisan legislative scorekeeper, in their new analysis projected that about 11 million people would lose health-care coverage due to provisions in the bill passed by the House of Representatives if it’s enacted in its current form. The CBO estimated that an additional 4 million or so would lose insurance due to expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies, which the bill doesn’t extend. Another 900,000 would lose coverage due to ACA rule changes the Trump administration proposed this spring.
Of the total estimated 16 million who could lose health coverage, that includes 7.8 million individuals on Medicaid and 8.2 million covered through the Affordable Care Act, according to Third Way.
More Illness and Death Thanks To Republicans
Using a validated simulation model, it is estimated that 7.7 million individuals becoming uninsured due to the proposed Medicaid changes would lead to a median of 11,308 excess deaths annually. When combined with the 5 million projected to lose coverage due to ACA policy expirations, over 20,000 additional deaths may occur each year. Note that these estimates are below the CBO levels of loss of coverage so death rates will be higher.
That’s at least 31,000 each year who will die their health insurance was taken from them
In addition to mortality, coverage loss is projected to result in substantial increases in uncontrolled chronic conditions, including 138,851 additional cases of uncontrolled diabetes, 165,165 cases of uncontrolled hypertension, and 46,200 cases of uncontrolled high cholesterol annually. These projections underscore the wide-reaching public health consequences of limiting access to healthcare. (MedRXIV)
250,000 new cases of chronic preventable illness
Milllions More Will Be in Medical Debt
Overall, medical debt would increase by $50 billion as a result of the Republican budget bill changes — a 15% rise over today’s $340 billion in unpaid debts, according to Third Way.
Health coverage losses would increase the number of people in families with medical debt by 5.4 million, according to Third Way’s report. More than 100 million people currently have medical debt in the U.S., according to KFF.
An estimated 2.2 million households would have medical debt because of Medicaid coverage losses, while 3.2 million more people would rack up balances due to Affordable Care Act reforms that may prompt coverage losses or higher premiums.
Without coverage, families may see their medical debts increase by as much as $22,800, according to the report. Meanwhile, 13% of households may accumulate an additional average of $8,790 in medical debt on top of $13,490 in existing balances.
This scheme to give tax breaks to the wealthy will cause chronic illness, deaths that are preventable and will further impoverish middle and lower income Americans

“I am your constituent and I want you to know the effect of the proposed Medicaid and Affordable Care Act (ACA) cuts.
16 million who could lose health coverage, that includes 7.8 million individuals on Medicaid and 8.2 million covered through the ACA according to the Congressional Budget Office.
Medical debt would increase by $50 billion as a result of the budget bill changes — a 15% rise over today’s $340 billion in unpaid debts, according to Third Way. On Average striking hard at millions of working American families.
31,000 people will die from preventable illnesses each and every year these cuts are in effect and about 250,000 new cases of preventable illnesses will occur including 138,851 additional cases of uncontrolled diabetes, 165,165 cases of uncontrolled hypertension, and 46,200 cases of uncontrolled high cholesterol annually. Enough is enough. Americans do not want you to cause increased debt for millions, increase the number of preventable chronic medical problems by 250,000 or kill tens of thousands who wouldn’t die if they could go to the doctor.
DO NOT VOTE TO CUT MEDICAID/MEDICAID EXPANSION.
DO NOT VOTE FOR MEDICAID WORK REQUIREMENTS.
DO NOT REMOVE STATE BASED MEDICAID TAXES.
DO NOT VOTE TO REMOVE/REDUCE ACA SUBSIDIES.
This is critical for millions of us and I promise I will vote accordingly if you vote to punish Americans by removing their health insurance.
