Current State of Affairs - Civil Rights, Nurses, Roe v Wade
Medicare and Integration
Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It’s a good day to remember the Poor People’s Campaign and Civil Rights. In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law. It allowed those 65 and over to have health insurance. It also integrated hospitals, because a facility could not receive Medicare funds unless it was integrated. An often overlooked fact.
Nurses Need Your Support
Nurses have been leaving the profession since way before the pandemic because facilities were not putting enough nurses on each shift to safely serve the patients. New Legislation has been introduced in Congress called the Nurse Staffing Standards for Hospital Patient Safety and Quality Care Act, S 1567. This bill can help fix that so nurses can provide each patient with sufficient attention. This is a safety issue. The legislation is supported by National Nurses United, and this link has a petition to Congress you can sign. I will also put a link to their website in the references as well as an action to call your representatives
Roe v Wade

The Women’s March will be hosting marches and events nationwide to call attention to the Supreme Court’s dreadful decision to rescind women’s rights. You can find one to attend here. Events take place on the 20th, 21st, and 22nd. Action below to let your representatives know to restore Roe v Wade.

I also want to draw your attention to unsafe nurse staffing levels in the US and the danger that presents for patients. Please work to support the Nurse Staffing Standards for Hospital Patient Safety and Quality Care Act, S 1567 and limit the patient staffing levels nurses have to support so they can provide quality care.
As my representative I need you to do this.”
