Healthcare Reform
April 10, 2023
Good Morning Healthcare Advocates
I’m very thankful for your advocacy for healthcare reform. Let me take a moment to point out some resources for you. At the bottom of every newsletter are links to additional sources. The first is a link to the League of Women Voters Healthcare Reform Toolkit. It is a rich source of material on healthcare reform, especially single payer.
The second link is our collection or resources. As we find new important sources I save them there for you. There are links to lists of healthcare reform groups, reproductive health sources (where to get medication, for instance), US government and other healthcare data sources and more.
I’ve left the links in place regarding claims appeals and denials of claims in the resource section.
If there are sites that you think are useful, please send them to me in the comments (which we all can see) and I will include them in our resource list.
GOP-Taliban Terrorizes Women and Girls
This is a very busy week for reproductive healthcare. The far right wing of the GOP, also known as the American Taliban, is trying its best to subjugate more than half the US population.
You already know about the biased judge advocate Kacsmaryk trying to overrule the FDA and their approval of Mifepristone.
Let’s remember that Mifepristone is part of the two drug protocol used for medical abortion. The 2nd medicine, Misoprostol, can also be used alone but the discomfort is greater.
Remember that Mifepristone is used for miscarriage management to make sure that the woman’s health is protected and fertility is preserved and is used to treat other conditions like Cushing’s syndrome and uterine leiomyomas (fibroids). If those are your issues you may be out of luck.
Let’s be clear, this same logic using not even pseudo science, but no science and don’t confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up, can be used by vaccine deniers, those that avoid medication, or anyone to make any drug illegal and thus put all of us in peril, by invalidating legally mandated investigations and authorizations of the FDA.
So, if COVID-19 deniers had their way so many more of us would be dead.
In other Reproductive Health Terrorism news, the Iowa attorney general has decided not to pay for rape victims’ contraceptives or abortions. How hateful do you have to be to do that? And in news from Florida, in a few weeks, a Florida mother is being forced to carry a baby to term that will die immediately after birth, because physicians are scared they might be sent to jail.
Let’s face it, forcing women to carry to term is actually a form of slavery and should be made illegal on those terms.
And of course, that’s not all. Terrorism incidents are on the rise at legal reproductive health clinics according to the FBI. Last year 26 people were charged with obstructing access to, threatening, or damaging abortion clinics, more than in the 3 previous years. According to the National Abortion Federation, from 2020 to 2021, reports of stalking rose 600%, clinic invasions 129%, and assaults 128%, link.
There is a bill before Congress called the Women’s Health Protection Act. I know that it is unlikely to pass because there are so many right wing Republican Taliban representatives in Congress, but our job is to let them know what we want them to do and to not let up.

I strongly support S. 701 and HR 12. The Women’s Health Protection Act. Women’s rights are in peril and you have the power to help protect them. Assaults at legal reproductive health clinics are on the rise (according to the FBI and the National Abortion Federation). Forcing women to carry to term is slavery. I want you to cosponsor and advocate for the passage of this bill, LOUD AND LONG. More than half the population needs protection and it is up to you.
